Patara: Where Ancient Democracy Grew Beside the Mediterranean

Patara is an ancient Lycian port city that has fascinated visitors for centuries with its natural beauty and archaeological contributions. First mentioned by the famous historian Herodotus as the birthplace of the god Apollo, Patara once stood as the capital of the Lycian League, the groundbreaking federation that laid the foundations for early democracy. The city is more than a repository for history lovers, however. It is home to one of the most breathtaking beaches in the country, an 18-kilometer stretch of golden sand that is a must-see coastal oasis, also offering a sanctuary for the endangered Caretta caretta sea turtles near Antalya.

As part of the Museum Nights program, Patara is now poised to reveal its ancient wonders under the night sky. With the city's grand boulevards and striking monuments bathed in the gentle light of the setting sun, visitors are invited on a memorable journey through history. The monumental Lycian tombs greet you as you enter the city, standing as imposing yet silent witnesses to the past. As you move through the architecturally impressive Triumphal Arch, you are invited to explore the nearby Hurmalık Bath and the adjoining remnants of a triple-naved basilica.
