Independence Trail
The Independence Trail follows important routes in Atatürk's national liberation struggle, which began in Istanbul in 1919 and ended in Samsun. The Independence Trail Project was started and completed in 2008 by the Kastamonu Governorship. İnebolu, the district of Kastamonu, was Anatolia's only window to the outside world during the National Struggle, which lasted from 1919 to 1922. In other words, İnebolu was the only region in the country that could receive outside support and aids. The aid that arrived in Inebolu was distributed to all of Anatolia via footpaths and ox-roads. The Kastamonu Governorship restored many historical buildings along the route and added sculptures and monuments along the route to turn it into a walking path. The Independence Trail has been marked with an international marking system. Thus, a 105-km long walking trail in lush greenery has been created. The first ten kilometers of this track is pathway, while the rest is for oxcart. The best time to walk the trail is between April and November. The region is indeed, cold in winter.
